Lejwana: The Botswana Diamond Jubilee Story

·Laone Kaelo Rahele

There are stories that do not begin with fanfare.

Botswana's story began quietly. A landlocked country, newly independent, with little to show the world and everything still to prove. What followed over the next sixty years was not handed to anyone. It was built — through resilience, through persistence, through the kind of endurance that does not make noise but leaves something permanent behind.

That is the story of lejwana la Botswana. The diamond of Botswana.

From Unknown to Renowned

In 1966, Botswana was one of the least known countries on the continent. Sixty years later, it stands among nations that have endured for centuries, spoken of in the same breath as their names. That shift was no accident. It came from a people who chose to build rather than wait, to endure rather than yield, and to invest in something that would outlast the moment.

The diamond became the symbol of that transformation — not because it was found in the ground, but because of what was done with it. A stone that had always been there became the foundation of a nation's identity. Lejwana, the Setswana word for diamond, carries all of that. It is not just a gemstone. It is a record of what Botswana chose to become.

The Name

Lejwana was chosen deliberately as the name for this collection.

It is the Setswana word for diamond, but it holds more than a translation. In the oldest sense, a diamond is something that endures — something that does not break under pressure, but becomes more defined by it. That is the quality Laone Kaelo Rahele wanted to capture: not the spectacle of a jubilee, but the quiet, permanent truth of what sixty years of resilience looks like when it is held in your hand.

This collection is not about celebration for its own sake. It is about permanence — about marking a moment so that it cannot be forgotten.

The Lejwana Collection

The three pieces in this collection are an introduction to what lejwana la Botswana means when it is expressed through design.

Each one carries the essence of the journey: the blue of the Botswana sky and flag, the black of the nation's people and strength, the white of the diamond at the centre of it all. These are not decorative objects. They are objects that hold a story.

The Lejwana Pendant, the Lejwana Tie Bar, and the Lejwana Signet Ring each represent a different way of wearing that story — a different way of saying: I was here. I know where this came from. I carry it with me.

Each piece is made to order. Every commission is a conversation about the occasion, the person, and what you want this piece to say for the next sixty years.

The Craft

Every stone is responsibly sourced. Every piece is made by hand. The metalwork is executed in sterling silver, finished to the standard that has earned Rahele Jewellery recognition at the Shining Light Awards and an invitation to exhibit at Milano Jewelry Week 2026.

We do not produce these pieces in volume. That is not what they are for.

A Gift for the Occasion

For those who want to mark this milestone with something that will last — for a family, a colleague, an institution, or yourself — the Lejwana Collection offers that. Each piece is presented in Rahele's signature packaging. Corporate commissions for multiple pieces are welcome.

The Lejwana Collection is available for a limited period. To have your piece in hand by 30 September — Botswana's Diamond Jubilee — enquire and place your commission now. To discuss a piece or a corporate commission, explore the full collection and get in touch.
